Smart Money / Wyckoff

Wyckoff distribution

Multi-phase topping process where 'smart money' distributes a position before a markdown phase. Mirror of accumulation. Phases: PSY, BC, AR, ST, SOW, UTAD.

What it means

Wyckoff distribution is the topping equivalent of accumulation: institutional sellers offload position into retail buying enthusiasm at the end of a major uptrend. Defined phases: Preliminary Supply (PSY), Buying Climax (BC), Automatic Reaction (AR), Secondary Test (ST), Sign of Weakness (SOW), Upthrust After Distribution (UTAD). Recognizing distribution lets you anticipate major tops and major downtrends.

Why it matters

Distribution is where institutional flow exits positions, often into retail FOMO. The 2000 dot-com top, 2007 housing top, 2021 crypto top all show Wyckoff distribution structures. Identifying distribution gives a structural framework for exiting longs and considering short positioning before the markdown phase.

How to use it

Identify the phases: PSY (early signs of supply absorption after an extended uptrend), BC (FOMO climax with volume blowoff), AR (sharp pullback off BC), ST (retest of BC high on lower volume), SOW (clear break below the AR low signaling distribution complete), UTAD (false breakout above BC high to trap remaining longs). Trade entries on UTAD + immediate failure; add shorts on SOW confirmation.

Example

BTC 2021 top: PSY in March-April 2021 ($59K), BC in mid-April 2021 ($64K with massive volume), AR pullback to $30K by July, ST rally to $69K in November (lower volume than BC), UTAD characteristics with the rapid rejection from $69K. Subsequent markdown to $15K by November 2022.

Deep dive

The six phases of distribution

(1) PSY: early supply emerging after long uptrend; selling absorbed but signs of distribution begin. (2) BC: euphoria climax with extreme volume; the high may or may not be the absolute top. (3) AR: sharp reaction lower defining the BOTTOM of the distribution range. (4) ST: retest of the BC high — typically failing on lower volume (less buying enthusiasm). (5) SOW: clear close below the AR low signaling the markdown is beginning. (6) UTAD: a fake breakout above the BC high to trap final longs before markdown.

UTAD — the topping equivalent of the spring

UTAD (Upthrust After Distribution) is the topping mirror of accumulation's spring. After ST and before SOW, distribution often produces a false breakout above the BC high — taking out long-stops, providing final liquidity for institutional distribution. The UTAD + immediate rejection is the highest-conviction short entry of the Wyckoff topping process. Risk-reward is typically excellent: small stop above the UTAD extreme, large target on full markdown.

Frequently asked

How is distribution different from a simple double top?

Double top is a 2-candle/2-point chart pattern. Wyckoff distribution is a multi-month process involving 6 distinct phases. A double top might form INSIDE a Wyckoff distribution (e.g., BC and ST high) but Wyckoff requires the full phase structure including AR, SOW, and UTAD.

How long does distribution take?

For major market tops: 3-9 months. Individual stocks can complete distribution in 6-16 weeks. Crypto often completes faster (4-8 weeks) due to higher volatility. The full structure including UTAD requires patience; expecting 'instant' tops misses the point.

Can I tell distribution apart from re-accumulation?

Hard in real time — both produce similar-looking sideways consolidations. Distinguishing features: distribution typically shows declining volume on each rally attempt (less buying enthusiasm), while re-accumulation shows steady or rising volume on rallies. UTAD vs spring at the range extreme is the definitive tell.

Does distribution always lead to a major decline?

When complete (full phases including SOW), yes — historically distribution structures precede meaningful markdowns. Failed distribution (where the range breaks UP instead of down after UTAD) does occur ~20-30% of the time, usually marking a final consolidation before continued uptrend rather than reversal.
