Meme stock

A stock whose price is driven primarily by social media-fueled speculation.

What it means

Meme stocks are equities that achieve cult status on platforms like Reddit's WallStreetBets or X. Price action is driven by community momentum more than by fundamental change. GameStop, AMC, and BlackBerry were the original 2021 cohort.

Why it matters

Meme stocks demonstrated that retail coordination can move markets - at least in low-float, high-short-interest names. The pattern recurs in waves and is now a permanent feature of markets.

How to use it

Track social mention velocity (RockstarMarkets Social Trends). Meme dynamics break standard valuation frameworks. Either play them as pure momentum or stay out - analytical models don't help much here.
