Ichimoku Kinko Hyo

Japanese cloud-based technical system with 5 components: Tenkan, Kijun, Senkou A, Senkou B, Chikou. The 'one-look equilibrium chart' — multi-timeframe trend in one view.

What it means

Ichimoku Kinko Hyo ('one-look equilibrium chart') is a Japanese technical analysis system developed by Goichi Hosoda over 30 years before publication in 1969. Composed of five lines: Tenkan-sen (9-period mid-point), Kijun-sen (26-period mid-point), Senkou Span A (Tenkan + Kijun midpoint, projected 26 forward), Senkou Span B (52-period mid-point, projected 26 forward), Chikou Span (current close, projected 26 back). The Kumo (cloud) between Senkou A and B is the system's signature element. Provides multiple-timeframe trend, momentum, and support/resistance in a single view.

Why it matters

Ichimoku is dense with information when read correctly. The cloud thickness reflects volatility; cloud color reflects trend; price above/below cloud reflects bias; Tenkan-Kijun crosses are trend triggers; Chikou span confirms momentum. Used heavily by Japanese institutional traders and increasingly by Western traders. The system is opinionated and self-contained — once mastered, removes need for additional indicators.

How to use it

Default settings: 9, 26, 52 (calibrated to Japanese market hours; works fine on 24-hour markets). Long bias: price above cloud + cloud green (Senkou A > B) + Chikou above 26-period-ago price + Tenkan > Kijun. Short bias: inverse. Cloud serves as dynamic support/resistance — tested zones often produce reactions.

Example

SPX August 2024 setup: price broke below daily cloud on August 5 ($528 vs cloud top $533). Chikou span crossed below 26-period-ago price. Tenkan crossed below Kijun August 6. Full bearish Ichimoku signal — continued downtrend confirmed. Re-entry above cloud at $542 on August 22 signaled trend reversal.

Deep dive

The five components and what each signals

(1) Tenkan-sen (9-period midpoint, fast): short-term price equilibrium, similar to a fast MA. (2) Kijun-sen (26-period midpoint, slow): medium-term equilibrium, key support/resistance. (3) Senkou Span A (Tenkan + Kijun average, projected 26 forward): leading cloud boundary. (4) Senkou Span B (52-period midpoint, projected 26 forward): slower leading cloud boundary. (5) Chikou span (close, projected 26 back): confirms momentum by comparing current price to 26 periods ago. The interaction of all 5 creates the system.

Reading the Kumo (cloud)

The cloud between Senkou A and B is Ichimoku's signature. Cloud color: green when Senkou A > B (bullish), red when A < B (bearish). Cloud thickness: thicker = stronger support/resistance. Price RELATIVE to cloud: above = bullish bias, below = bearish bias, inside = neutral/transition. Cloud projected forward 26 periods means you can see future support/resistance zones — useful for planning trade exits and entries weeks ahead.

Frequently asked

Is Ichimoku suitable for beginners?

Initially overwhelming — five components and complex interactions. But it's self-contained: once learned, you don't need 10 other indicators. Many traders find it cleaner than juggling RSI + MACD + MAs separately. Plan for 2-3 months of dedicated study to gain comfort.

Should I change the default 9-26-52 settings?

Generally no. The default settings have been backtested for decades. Some traders use 7-22-44 or 10-30-60 for slight variations. Major recalibrations rarely improve results meaningfully; the default is well-optimized.

Does Ichimoku work on cryptocurrencies?

Yes — works well across markets. Crypto's higher volatility produces clearer cloud signals. Major BTC/ETH moves often respect cloud support/resistance.

What's the highest-conviction Ichimoku setup?

All five signals aligned: (1) price above cloud, (2) cloud green ahead, (3) Tenkan above Kijun, (4) Chikou above 26-period-ago price, (5) cloud thick. Bullish 'perfect storm' setup with high follow-through historically. Inverse for shorts.
