Stablecoin

A cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value, typically pegged to the US dollar.

What it means

Stablecoins peg to a reference asset (usually USD) using either reserves (USDC, USDT), algorithmic mechanisms (failed: UST), or crypto collateralization (DAI). They serve as the on-chain dollar layer.

Why it matters

Stablecoins are the actual transaction medium of crypto. Total stablecoin market cap is a leading indicator of crypto market liquidity. A drop typically precedes price weakness.

How to use it

Watch USDC and USDT supply changes. Sustained outflows = liquidity leaving crypto. Sustained inflows = liquidity entering, typically bullish.
